At Abacus Care Home, we understand the importance of keeping our residents engaged, active, and entertained. We offer a wide range of activities for elderly residents, ensuring every day is filled with fun, social interaction, and stimulating experiences.

The Garden
Abacus Care Home features a spacious secure garden where residents can enjoy outdoor activities, themed days, and meals. We host events like Armed Forces Day, Beach Day, and Easter celebrations, allowing residents to relax, socialise, and enjoy the outdoors. Our gardening club also lets residents grow flowers and vegetables, promoting creativity and engagement.
Entertainment
Every Wednesday afternoon, residents enjoy live music and performances. We also host events like Christmas pantos, hand massages, and visits from an ice cream van. Special performances, such as birds of prey shows and bagpipers, bring extra excitement, while schoolchildren visit for carol singing and Maypole dancing.

Birthdays
Birthdays are a highlight at Abacus Care Home, with themed parties like Queens Tea and Wild West celebrations for milestone birthdays. Families are welcome to organise parties for their loved ones, with all residents joining in the fun.
Activities Room
Our Activities Room is where residents engage in hobbies and interests based on their life histories. This helps our team personalise activities, particularly for those living with dementia, encouraging meaningful social interaction and bonding with others who share similar interests.

The Abacus Inn
Residents and families can enjoy pub-themed evenings at The Abacus Inn, featuring pub quizzes, karaoke, and even horseracing, creating a lively and engaging atmosphere.
Library
The Abacus Library offers a selection of books for residents to enjoy. Additionally, we receive Reminiscence Boxes every two months, which help residents recall past memories, such as washing day or war years, through nostalgic items and activities.

Convenience Stall
At our Convenience Stall, residents can purchase toiletries and treats. We also host fundraising events like the Easter Raffle, Summer Fayre, and Christmas Raffle to support more activities and experiences for our residents.
Other activities
The Burton Mail is delivered daily, and after morning exercise, the paper is read out to the residents, and together, they attempt to complete the crossword. This is then followed by a range of activities from the knitting group, interactive activities, games, quizzes or craft making to The Gentleman’s Club.
On Mondays, the hairdresser visits ‘The Abacus Beauty Salon’ (this is an additional cost); we also have a nail bar and foot spa for those who would like a little pamper time. We have trips out of the home including visiting the Arboretum, going on Christmas meals and shopping trips.
Fundraising plays a big part in the activities at Abacus, as the more we raise, the more we can do with the residents. Throughout the year we have an Easter Raffle, Summer Fayre, Christmas Raffle, plus any crafts that the residents have made for selling. In 2020, due to the COVID-19 lockdown, the Abacus care staff put on their own pantomime for the residents, and DVDs were sold to raise funds.
It is up to the individual how much they choose to participate in the activities available, but we will always try to encourage residents to be involved where possible, and if loved ones get involved too, then the more, the merrier.
